Church of Saint Mary on Saint Meinhard Island

The Church of Saint Mary on Saint Meinhard Island is a medieval stone structure rising from the Daugava River near Ikšķile. Its remaining walls and arches reveal the layout of an early place of worship, now complemented by a tall cross and stone altar from modern artists.

This structure was founded in 1184 by Canon Meinhard from Holstein and served as the region's first Christian place of worship. It marks the beginning of organized Christian life in the lands that would become Latvia.

The site holds meaning as a symbol of Latvia's early Christian roots and draws visitors seeking to connect with this formative period. Modern artistic additions like the cross and altar create a dialogue between ancient faith and contemporary reflection.

You can reach the ruins on foot when water levels are low along the Daugava. Metal protective coverings shield the remaining structures from weather, making visits feasible during different seasons.

The ruins now stand on an artificial island created by the Riga hydroelectric dam built in the 1970s. This transformation of the river landscape has isolated and protected the medieval structure in an unexpected way.
