Church of Saint Mary on Saint Meinhard Island, Medieval church ruins on Saint Meinhard Island, Latvia.
The stone walls and arches of the Church of Saint Mary stand on an island in the Daugava River near Ikšķile.
Built in 1184 by Canon Meinard from Holstein, this church served as the first Christian cathedral in the territory of modern Latvia.
The site features a 10-meter high cross by artist E. Samovics and a stone altar by sculptor J. Karlovs near the medieval ruins.
The church ruins remain accessible by foot during periods of low water, with metal coverings protecting the remaining structures from weather damage.
The church foundations now rest on an artificial island, created when the Riga hydroelectric dam changed the river landscape in the 1970s.
