Wakunaga Garden, Corporate garden in Akitakata, Japan.
Wakunaga Garden is a large estate with two distinct landscape sections that combine wooded areas with waterfalls alongside open spaces devoted to medicinal plants. One section features a flat design with many plant species, while the other has a conical layout with cascading water features.
The garden was established in 1993 as both a research facility and recreation space for employees of a pharmaceutical company. Its creation under Tsutomu Yasunaga merged the focus on medicinal plant research with public access.
The garden reflects Japanese design principles where visitors walk through open spaces and discover how water flows around carefully placed stones and plants. The layout shows how these elements work together to create a sense of harmony in a working landscape.
Entry requires advance booking, and the site is open from April through November on weekdays and weekends. Plan ahead since access and hours shift with the season.
One dedicated section focuses entirely on medicinal plants used by the pharmaceutical industry. Alongside this, the garden maintains an extensive collection of roses gathered from different regions worldwide.
