Petnjica Municipality, municipality in northern Montenegro
Petnjica Municipality is a local government area in northern Montenegro, with its administrative center in the village of Petnjica. It consists of 7 local communities and 25 settlements, spread across a landscape of hills and valleys.
Petnjica was first established as a municipality in 1957, but it lost that status and became part of Berane. In 2013, it regained its municipality status after the Montenegrin Parliament changed the territorial organization.
In the villages around Petnjica, you can still see traditional stone houses with steep roofs, and in summer, families often gather for outdoor meals. The local community life centers on small mosques and village squares, where people meet and share news.
To reach Petnjica, travelers usually come from Berane, about 20 kilometers to the south, via a road that winds through the countryside. Once in the area, having a car is helpful for exploring the scattered villages, as public transport is limited.
The area is known for its katuns, summer settlements where families bring livestock to graze on mountain pastures. These katuns are still in use today, and visitors may come across them while hiking in the surrounding hills.
