Kedah Royal Mausoleum, Royal mausoleum and Islamic cemetery in Langgar, Kedah, Malaysia
The Kedah Royal Mausoleum is a walled burial ground in Langgar, a village northeast of Alor Setar in the Malaysian state of Kedah. The compound contains stone grave markers, maintained gardens, a pavilion, and a gallery space dedicated to the history of the Kedah sultanate.
The site was established as a royal burial ground in 1701, when Sultan Abdullah Muazzam Shah became the first sultan of Kedah to be laid to rest here. Successive sultans were buried here over the following centuries, with the most recent being Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, who died in 2017.
The tombstones carry traditional Islamic inscriptions in Malay and Arabic, and some show carvings that point to old ties with Aceh. On religious occasions, families gather to say prayers and pass on stories about past sultans to younger generations.
Visitors should wear modest, covering clothing and move through the grounds quietly, as this is an active burial site. The gallery space inside the compound is not always open to the public, so it is worth checking in advance whether it can be accessed.
The grounds also contain the grave of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, who is buried here alongside members of the royal family. Most visitors are unaware that this site brings together both royal and national history in one place.
