Balai Nobat, Royal ceremonial hall in Alor Setar, Malaysia

Balai Nobat is an octagonal tower in Alor Setar featuring traditional Malay architectural elements and ornate decorations throughout its structure. The building displays classic design features of local royal architecture with characteristic rooflines and decorative detailing.

Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II commissioned the building in 1735 when Alor Setar was established as Kedah's administrative center. The structure was created during a period when the city was solidifying its role as the royal seat and government hub.

Inside, you can find the royal musical ensemble called Nobat, which includes traditional instruments like serunai, nafiri, gendang, and gong. These instruments are closely tied to court ceremonies and are performed during official royal occasions.

The building is open to visitors during daytime hours, allowing you to observe the architectural details up close. Guided tours are available to help you understand the royal significance and history of the structure better.

Musicians perform the royal Nobat ensemble during official occasions such as royal weddings and the installation of new sultans. These live performances happen several times a year and remain an active part of court tradition.
