Balai Besar, Royal ceremonial structure in Alor Setar, Malaysia
Balai Besar is a royal ceremonial building in Alor Setar featuring tall supporting pillars topped with Victorian ironwork. The structure blends Malaysian and Thai architectural elements in its overall design.
The original structure was built in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin and underwent reconstruction after invasions in 1770 and 1821. These rebuilds reflect the region's turbulent past and changing political circumstances.
The building serves as a venue for royal ceremonies and state functions directed by the Sultan of Kedah. These traditions continue to shape local identity and mark important moments in the region's public life.
The building stands along Jalan Pekan Melayu opposite Masjid Zahir in central Alor Setar and remains closed to public access. Due to its ceremonial role, it can only be viewed from outside but is easy to locate in the city center.
In 1904 the building hosted extended wedding celebrations for five royal children spanning three months. These grand festivities created significant financial strain on the state and marked an unusual moment in royal history.
