Snelbinder

The Snelbinder is a dedicated cycling bridge that spans the Waal River and connects Nijmegen's city center with the Lent neighborhood. Its design features separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, running parallel to the historic railway bridge that stands nearby.

This bridge opened in 2004 to address growing bicycle traffic between the two neighborhoods. Its neighbor, the railway bridge designed by Cuypers, had already served the area since the 19th century.

The name 'Snelbinder' comes from elastic straps that cyclists use to secure their cargo, showing how deeply the bicycle is woven into everyday Dutch life. This naming choice reveals how the bicycle is not just transport but a core part of local identity.

The bridge is open year-round with a flat, easy-to-navigate surface that works well for all types of bicycles and for people on foot. The wide pathway means you can move through comfortably even when other users are crossing.

A metal plaque on the railing features words from Dutch writer Nescio, referencing the railway bridge in a literary work. This small touch connects the modern structure to the city's cultural past.
