Heimenberg

Heimenberg is a circular rampart in Rhenen that spans a forested hilltop with multiple interconnected paths. Walkways wind through thick woodland, following the contours of the ancient walls and the natural valleys that shape its terrain.

This fortification dates to the Merovingian period, built between the 9th and 10th centuries as a defensive structure near the Niederrijn river. It formed part of the regional defense strategy during the early Middle Ages.

The name likely connects to old stories about protective spirits in the region. Today, visitors can see how this elevated spot fits into the surrounding landscape and serves as a walking destination for locals.

The site is freely accessible and can be explored year-round, with forest paths offering varying degrees of difficulty depending on weather. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the ground is often uneven and can be muddy.

In the early 2000s, a landscape designer reshaped the site, blending modern design elements with the ancient rampart. This renovation created new pathways and viewpoints that allow visitors today to experience the historical spot in fresh ways.
