Dijkgatbos, Nature area in Wieringerwerf, Netherlands
Dijkgatbos is a mixed forest near Wieringerwerf composed of black alders and birch trees spread across the area. Several marked walking trails wind through the woodland, offering different routes for visitors to explore.
The woodland emerged from consequences of an explosive event in 1945 that created deep craters in the dike and flooded much of the surrounding polder land. The forest later developed on the altered soil layers formed by this inundation.
The forest hosts a popular running race each November and summer programs for children, bringing the local community together for outdoor activities. These regular gatherings shape how people experience and use this woodland throughout the year.
Visitors can access the woodland from a parking area on Noorderdijkweg where marked trails begin. The paths are suitable for family walks and offer different route options depending on time and fitness.
The woodland harbors around fifteen rare bird species that nest in the area due to its particular soil conditions. These specialized habitats exist because of the complex soil layers created by the 1945 event.
