Broekpolder, Recreation area and water board in Vlaardingen and Midden-Delfland, Netherlands.
Broekpolder is a diverse recreation area in Vlaardingen and Midden-Delfland spanning 400 hectares of mixed natural landscape with forests, open grasslands, and waterways. Sports facilities including soccer fields, tennis courts, and a golf course are spread throughout the terrain alongside nature trails and bike paths.
The area was elevated during the 1960s and 1970s using silt dredged from Rotterdam ports to raise it above the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. This engineering project transformed formerly low-lying wetland into the stable terrain visitors see today.
The name comes from "broek," a Dutch word for wetlands, reflecting the area's original character shaped by water and soft ground. Visitors today can see how this heritage persists in the mix of forests and open fields that form the everyday landscape.
The area offers good access for walkers and cyclists, with established paths winding through the different zones. Spring and summer provide the most pleasant conditions for exploring, though the grounds remain open and accessible throughout the year.
Scottish Highland cattle roam freely in designated sections, naturally maintaining the grasslands while adding an unexpected element to the Dutch landscape. These large animals are rarely seen in such recreation areas and create memorable encounters for visitors.
