Cannon Point Walkway, Hiking trail in Upper Hutt City, New Zealand.

Cannon Point Walkway is a hiking trail running through Akatarawa Forest near Upper Hutt, stretching about 7.7 kilometers in total. The route climbs to 341 meters above the Hutt Valley and has two entry points at Bridge Road and Birchville.

The steep path to the summit was originally created by farm owners who needed ways to move on foot and horseback through the land. It later became a regular walking route for people in the surrounding area.

The name comes from a fallen tree on the hilltop that locals thought resembled a cannon when seen from below. This folk name has stuck around and gives the place a character that connects visitors to how people once saw the land.

The full circuit walk takes about three hours to complete and both entry points are easy to locate. Ground conditions change with the seasons, so walkers should bring sturdy footwear and weather protection for their comfort.

In October 1932, a railway excursion brought about 800 people to explore this spot, marking the first major organized group visit. This event shows the place was already a popular day trip destination back then.
