Gear Homestead, Colonial building in Porirua, New Zealand.

Located on Okowai Road, the Gear Homestead features a two-story weatherboard construction with thick walls filled with sawdust for natural insulation against cold winds.

The residence, completed in 1887 for James Gear, founder of the Gear Meat Preserving and Freezing Company, remained in the family ownership until 1967.

The homestead represents Victorian architecture with its matai, totara, and kauri wood craftsmanship, reflecting the social status of early New Zealand industrialists.

The building functions as a cafe, bar, and restaurant, open seven days a week, offering visitors the opportunity to experience this Category 2 historic place.

Film director Peter Jackson selected this location for his first movie 'Bad Taste' in the 1980s, marking the beginning of New Zealand's international film presence.
