Lower Hutt War Memorial Library, Public library in Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
The Lower Hutt War Memorial Library is a public library serving Lower Hutt and operates as a central branch of the Hutt City Libraries network. The building houses books, digital materials, computers, study areas, and meeting rooms for community use.
Built between 1952 and 1956, the building marks a shift in how New Zealand remembered World War II. After the war, commemorations moved away from traditional monuments toward practical community facilities.
The murals by Leonard Mitchell feature life-sized figures depicting sacrifice and human achievement. These artworks shape how visitors experience the interior spaces of the building.
The library is located at the corner of Queens Drive and Woburn Road, making it straightforward to find. Extended hours on Wednesdays until 8:30 PM provide additional flexibility for working visitors.
The building was designed alongside the adjacent St. James's Church as a coordinated pair. Architect Ron Muston created both structures to share a unified architectural language.
