Rawat Fort

Rawat Fort is a square-shaped fortification with two main gates and a central domed building at its core. Small rooms line the inner perimeter walls throughout the structure.

The fort was built in the 15th century as a caravanserai, but its foundations rest upon an even older structure from 1036. This layering shows how long this location served as an important stop.

The mosque inside shows red brick and limestone work that reflects Mughal building traditions. Visitors can see these construction details as they explore the site.

The fort sits along the Grand Trunk Road east of Rawalpindi and is straightforward to reach by vehicle. Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower and temperatures are more comfortable.

From the mosque roof you can see the ancient Mankiala stupa in the distance, connecting two different historical periods in one view. This sight line reveals how settlement in the region spanned across centuries.
