Zamek w Morawicy, Medieval castle ruins on Eagle's Nests Trail, Poland.
Zamek w Morawicy is a castle ruin set on a hilltop in Morawica, south of Krakow in Poland. Parts of the medieval stone walls still stand on the site, where a church and a rectory were later built using stones taken from the original fortification.
The Toporczyk family made this hilltop their residence in the late 12th century, but the Tęczyński family moved their seat to Tenczyn Castle in 1319. After that move, the fortress fell out of use and slowly fell apart over the following centuries.
The Church of Saint Bartholomew marks how the community transformed the site after the fortress lost its military purpose. The building rises on the ruins of the medieval structure and defines how visitors experience the location today.
The ruins sit along the Eagle's Nests Trail and can be reached on foot, though finding the hilltop path requires some attention. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground around the remaining walls and the church can be uneven.
Excavations beneath the rectory uncovered a network of underground passages that were part of the original defense system. These hidden routes show how carefully the fortress was planned to allow escape and offer protection in times of attack.
