Wałowa Gate in Stargard, Medieval city gate in Stargard, Poland.
The Wałowa Gate is a medieval city gate in Stargard built from red brick that rises approximately 19 meters tall. It has an irregular rectangular base, is reinforced with buttresses along its exterior walls, and features a passage with a pointed archway at ground level.
The gate was built in 1430 as one of four main entrances to the city and served as part of its defensive walls. Following a fire in 1590 that damaged its upper floors, the structure underwent reconstruction to restore the affected areas.
The gate blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, visible in its decorative details on the upper sections like pilasters and cornices. This combination of architectural languages reflects the city's transformation during the late medieval and early modern periods.
The interior contains a vaulted passage for foot traffic, and the upper floors house a municipal art gallery open to the public. Visitors may find that access to different levels and exhibition spaces operates on varying schedules throughout the year.
The structure stands as the only remaining city gate in the region that fully blends Gothic architectural elements with Renaissance details. This combination developed gradually over decades as repairs and modifications incorporated different architectural periods into a single monument.
