Stargard, Administrative division in West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland
Stargard is a city in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of northwestern Poland, roughly thirty kilometers east of Szczecin. The city spreads along the Ina River and includes its historic core, residential neighborhoods, and industrial zones.
A Slavic gord appeared here in the eighth century, and the settlement was first mentioned in written records in 1124. Magdeburg city rights were granted in 1243, accelerating its development as a trading center.
The county maintains multiple administrative functions through its urban centers of Chociwel, Dobrzany, Ińsko, and Suchań, each contributing to regional development.
The city is accessible from Szczecin by train or car, with the railway station located near the center. A visit can be combined with exploring the surrounding countryside, especially if you plan to visit rural areas of the county.
The name Stargard comes from an Old Slavic term meaning old fortified settlement. This designation points to the defended site that existed long before the medieval town was chartered.
