National Theatre "Toša Jovanović"

The National Theatre Tosa Jovanovic is a public theater on Liberty Square in Zrenjanin with three separate stages housed within one historical building. It offers drama productions, chamber performances, and puppet shows designed for different audience groups.

The building originated in 1835 and underwent multiple renovations, with a significant reconstruction in 1884 that added an orchestra pit and an elevated stage. This transformation established it as a modern theater venue for that era.

The theater has been a professional ensemble since 1946 and presents performances that draw from both classical Serbian theatrical traditions and contemporary artistic expressions. The venue shapes the cultural life of the city and attracts audiences across different generations.

The theater is located between the Old Vojvodina hotel and the Finance palace in the city center with easy pedestrian access. Performances are scheduled regularly for different audience types and accessibility needs.

The building started as a grain warehouse that was purchased and transformed by a wealthy local merchant into a theater. The merchant hoped this would attract a famous Hungarian actress from Pest to the city.
