Lopatinsky garden, Public garden in central Smolensk, Russia
Lopatinsky garden is a public green space in downtown Smolensk built on the site of a former royal bastion that once protected the city. The grounds preserve sections of the old fortress walls and towers, along with a water-filled moat that remains from the original fortification system.
Governor Alexander Lopatin founded this garden in 1874 on abandoned fortification grounds, converting a neglected military structure into a public gathering space. The transformation gave new purpose to a site that had long ceased to serve its original defensive role.
The garden is named after the governor who created it in the 1870s and serves as a gathering place where locals honor key moments from the city's past. Visitors find themselves walking among monuments that mark events people in Smolensk still remember and discuss today.
The garden is open during the day and into the evening, with seating areas, cafes, and dining options spread across the grounds. Paths are easy to walk through, so visitors can explore the space at their own pace and take time to rest whenever needed.
Hidden within the grounds is the city's first monument dedicated to its liberation, a work that many visitors pass without noticing. This memorial reveals how the space serves as a lasting record of a pivotal moment that locals still speak about today.
