Church of Our Lady icon Shestokovskaya, Eastern Orthodox church on Starorusskaya Street, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The Church of Our Lady icon Shestokovskaya is an Eastern Orthodox church on Starorusskaya Street in Saint Petersburg, built in the Russian Revival style. The stone building carries five onion domes and a four-tiered bell tower that rises above the surrounding rooftops.
The church was built between 1895 and 1900 by architect Nikolay Nikitich Nikonov. In 1904, architect A.Ya. Puring made changes to the building, adjusting some of its features shortly after it opened.
The interior is lined with icons arranged on a gilded iconostasis, as is traditional in Orthodox churches. Visitors who come during a service can hear the choir singing, which fills the whole space in a way that is hard to ignore.
Regular religious services take place throughout the week, so it is worth timing your visit outside of those hours if you want to look around the interior without interruption. Shoulders and knees should be covered when entering.
The church takes its name from a Marian icon associated with Shestokovskaya Street in Moscow, giving it a geographic origin far from Saint Petersburg. This icon was the starting point for the decision to build a church in its honor in this part of the city.
