Central Universal Department Store, Department store in Tsentralny District, Russia
The Central Universal Department Store is a three-story retail building in Tsentralny District, Russia, selling clothing, footwear, and household goods across its floors. The structure dates from the 1930s and holds official status as a regional cultural heritage site.
The store opened in 1937, designed by architect Maria Pavlovna Tsubikova, and has traded from the same spot without interruption since then. It was one of the first large retail buildings constructed in this part of the Soviet Union.
The building was designed in the Soviet constructivist style, which is still visible in its clean lines and plain facade. Shoppers today move through spaces where the original structure remains largely intact beneath the everyday retail activity.
The store sits in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. With three floors and many sections, it helps to allow extra time if you want to look around without rushing.
Although the building is officially protected as a heritage site, it functions as an ordinary shopping destination used by local residents every day. This means visitors can walk through a protected 1930s structure without paying an entrance fee or joining a tour.
