St. George's Church

St. George's Church is an Armenian Apostolic temple featuring a square prayer hall topped by a central dome, with a semicircular altar section. A rectangular western entrance portico houses the bell tower and serves as the main approach.

Armenian settlers from Crimea founded Sultan-Saly in 1779 and built their first church here in 1795. The stone structure was completed in stages over the following decades, reaching its current form by 1867.

The church remains a gathering place for the Armenian community in the region today. People come here for services and local celebrations that keep Armenian Christian traditions alive.

The church remains active year-round and welcomes visitors during service times. It is best to check local opening hours ahead of your visit and wear respectful clothing when entering.

A severe storm in 1896 nearly destroyed the dome and cross of the building. The local community then undertook substantial reconstruction work to restore their place of worship.
