Mavsumiy ishchi is a marble and granite sculpture depicting a contemplative older worker wearing an apron with rolled-up sleeves. The figure is defined by thoughtful facial features and a pose that conveys quiet dignity through the positioning of the body and limbs.
The sculpture was created between 1928 and 1929 by sculptor I.D. Shadr and installed in 1930 at Lermontovskaya Square. The location was near a former labor exchange where seasonal workers sought employment opportunities.
The sculpture represents a seasonal worker who traveled to Moscow seeking winter employment. It embodies the dignity and inner depth of people who came to the city to earn their living.
The monument sits on Lermontovskaya Square and is accessible from several nearby metro stations. Chistye Prudy, Turgenevskaya, and Krasnoselskaya stations all provide convenient access to the location.
A bronze version of this sculpture was produced in 1948 for the Tretyakov Gallery, allowing the artistic vision to reach a wider audience. This second casting expanded the work's presence beyond its original public location.
