The Palace Stables comprise classical structures with mansard roofs located opposite the Dutch Gardens in central Gatchina. The complex contains multiple connected sections designed to house horses and organize military guard units efficiently.
Construction took place in 1798 under Emperor Paul I as a facility for the imperial guard's horses. The site later transitioned to serve as a barracks for the Cuirassier Regiment.
The stables reflect the imperial court's deep connection to horsemanship and cavalry traditions. Visitors can still observe the expansive design that demonstrates how central these practices were to imperial military life.
The building is publicly accessible and now operates as a cultural center offering exhibitions and guided tours. Plan to spend adequate time exploring the architectural details and exhibits covering military and equestrian subjects.
The facade once displayed an image of Christ the Savior commemorating the imperial family's survival of a major train accident. This religious marking was an unusual tribute on a military building reflecting personal imperial gratitude.
