Мост Кораблестроителей, Concrete bridge in Vasileostrovsky District, Russia.
The Shipbuilders Bridge connects Vasilievsky Island to Decembrists Island across the Smolenka River with six traffic lanes for vehicles. Wide granite staircases at each corner provide direct access to the water and pedestrian paths on both sides.
Designed by engineers L. N. Sobolev and B. E. Eduardov, the bridge replaced an earlier wooden pedestrian crossing and began serving traffic in 1982. This concrete structure has remained a key passage between the islands since its opening.
The bridge takes its name from the shipbuilding tradition that defined this area, reflecting how maritime work shaped the neighborhood's identity and character.
Visit during daylight hours when lighting reveals the bridge's architectural details and pedestrians can safely navigate the granite stairs to the waterfront. The granite surfaces can become slippery in colder months, so care is needed when walking.
The three-hinged frame system in the supporting girders is an engineering solution that gives the wide span both flexibility and stability under traffic loads. This design method reduces internal stresses that might otherwise build up in the structure.
