Ménagerie

The Ménagerie is a large park situated north of Gatchina Palace, featuring forests, ponds, meadows, and an intricate system of walking paths. The terrain alternates between open areas with views and thickly wooded sections that create distinct zones throughout the grounds.

The park was established in 1765 when Count Grigory Orlov received the Gatchina estate from Catherine II and converted it into a hunting ground. The property was later expanded and developed with various features to enhance the imperial retreat.

The park served as a recreational retreat for the imperial family and their guests, who walked its paths and enjoyed the surroundings. Today, locals and visitors use the same spaces for everyday activities and discover the tranquility that once belonged to the nobility.

The park has multiple entrances and is open year-round, with warmer months offering the most pleasant conditions for exploring. Visitors should wear suitable footwear since paths cross varied terrain and can become slippery when wet.

The grounds once housed exotic animals including camels, bears, and European bison from Białowieża Forest. This animal collection was maintained until 1917 as part of the imperial court's hunting traditions.
