Западно-Палянское месторождение, Mercury deposit in Chaunsky District, Chukotka, Russia.
The Zapadno-Palyanskoye deposit is a mercury site containing three ore bodies with cinnabar mineralization in Chaunsky District. The ore extends to depths of around 215 meters (700 feet) within sandstone and shale formations, holding estimated reserves of 10,100 tons with an average ore grade of 0.53 percent.
The deposit was discovered in 1951 when geologist V.A. Kitaev identified elevated cinnabar content in the Skryty stream valley during regional exploration work. This finding led to further investigations across the remote area.
Mining operations in this remote northern region brought industrial development and new technical skills to local communities. The work shaped daily life in one of Russia's harshest environments.
The site lies in one of Russia's most isolated regions with extreme climate conditions and limited access. Visitors need special permits and equipment to reach this area.
Researchers debate whether this site belongs to the quartz-dickite or carbonate-polyargillite deposit categories, creating scientific questions about its exact classification. The geological puzzle continues to interest specialists studying mineral formation in polar regions.
