Category:Monument to City of Military Glory, Military glory monument in Gatchina, Russia
The Monument to City of Military Glory is a granite and bronze column in the center of Gatchina, Russia, topped with the national emblem. The shaft has four sides, each carrying a bronze relief panel with historical scenes, and the overall form follows New Classical architecture.
Gatchina received the title City of Military Glory in 2015, in recognition of the city's resistance against German forces during World War II. The column was built and inaugurated shortly after this official designation.
The four bronze panels on the column show combat scenes from different periods of Russian history. Walking slowly around the base gives a clear view of each scene and the figures carved into them.
The column stands on an open square in the center of Gatchina and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets. It works well as a starting point for a walk through the historic part of the city.
The City of Military Glory title is awarded by the Russian state to cities that played a key role in defending the country, and Gatchina is one of roughly 45 cities to hold it. The column in Gatchina follows a standard design shared by all honored cities, making it part of a recognizable series of monuments across Russia.
