Rzhev Kremlin is a medieval fortress in Rzhev situated on elevated terrain near the Volga River. The remains display portions of stone walls and defensive structures built according to medieval military design principles.
The fortress originated in the 12th century as a strategic military outpost between the principalities of Tver, Moscow, and Smolensk. It remained a border post until the 15th century when the regional balance shifted.
The site carries the name of a medieval stronghold and shows remnants of life from that era in its layout. Visitors can sense how residents here lived in a border region between competing principalities.
The site is accessible by local bus from Rzhev railway station and lies within easy reach of the city center. Guided tours are available through the local tourism office to help interpret the ruins on the ground.
Excavations uncovered numerous old coins indicating this was a hub for currency exchange between regions. This discovery suggests merchants from different territories gathered here to conduct business.
