Jeu de Paume building of Saint Petersburg State University
Jeu de Paume building of Saint Petersburg State University, Federal cultural heritage building in Vasileostrovsky District, Russia.
The Jeu de Paume building of Saint Petersburg State University is a classicist structure with balanced proportions and clean lines from the 18th century. Its plain yet well-proportioned facade displays typical features of Russian classicism from that period, including regular window rows and geometric ornaments.
The building was constructed in 1778 as a dedicated venue for the French ball game jeu de paume. Over time, it became part of the university's growing campus and has served educational purposes ever since.
The building's name comes from an old French ball game that was once played inside these walls. Today, walking through it gives a sense of how recreational spaces from that era shaped the way buildings were designed and used.
The building is located within the university complex and can be visited through guided tours that explain its architecture and academic role. It is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible and how access to the building works.
This building is one of the few surviving structures in Russia that was specifically built for the French game jeu de paume. The fact that it still stands and is used today shows how European leisure fashions were reflected in Russian architecture.
