Ladugårdsgrinden, Modernist building complex in Östermalm district, Stockholm, Sweden.
Ladugårdsgrinden is a 20th-century building complex in the Östermalm district positioned between Stureplan and Humlegården. The complex consists of three separate structures along Humlegårdsgatan, Biblioteksgatan, and Sturegatan streets, including a hotel with gray granite facades, an office building, and a former cinema.
The name comes from a decorated gate that marked the entrance to Ladugårdslandet starting in the 19th century, where Stockholm residents exercised grazing rights. The district took its current form in the late 1800s when new streets were built and it separated from neighboring areas.
The quarter functions today as a modern office and hotel district where daily life blends work and tourism. The buildings shape the appearance of upscale Östermalm and show how this part of the city has evolved over time.
The complex sits centrally between two popular squares and is easy to reach on foot. All three buildings front public streets, so you can view them from multiple angles and walk around the entire complex.
The 1885 Hotel Anglais that originally defined the district was replaced in the 1960s with a modern structure clad in white granite. This transformation shows how the area fundamentally renewed itself while keeping its central location.
