The complex emerged from an architectural competition in 1960, which was won by Danish architects Jean-Jacques Baruël and Paul Niepoort with their design called Capitolium. The project was completed and has been a defining feature of Nyköping's townscape ever since.
The building serves as the center for local government and community life in Nyköping. Residents and visitors use it daily as a place for administrative matters and public gatherings.
The building is easily accessible and located centrally, where it can be explored on foot. Visitors should note that some areas may be restricted, and it is recommended to check opening hours in advance.
Archaeological excavations during construction uncovered a counting stick from the 13th century. This find is recognized as the oldest of its type ever discovered in Sweden.
