Sörmland Museum, County museum in Nyköping, Sweden.
The Sörmland Museum is a regional museum located in Nyköping's harbor area, housing more than 70,000 historical objects from Södermanland. Its collections are spread across multiple locations, including Nyköpinghus Castle and Nynäs Slott, where additional exhibition spaces are found.
The museum originally operated from Nyköpinghus Castle but relocated to a new harbor-area building in 2018 to accommodate its expanding collection. This move allowed for improved exhibition design and better presentation of the regional objects.
The museum presents how Södermanland's people lived and changed over time, with displays showing daily life from the 1800s onward and how childhood has transformed across generations. Visitors can see objects that tell these personal stories and understand what mattered to families in this region.
The main site is easily accessible in the harbor area, while the branch locations at the castles offer additional insights and can be combined for a full day visit. An on-site restaurant serves local dishes and a gift shop offers regional products.
A network of red metal pennants called Historien i Sörmland connects 13 towns across the region, displaying local stories through text and images at public locations. These scattered exhibition points make regional history visible and accessible throughout Södermanland.
