Guldbron, Modern bridge in central Stockholm, Sweden
Guldbron is a bridge in central Stockholm that links Södermalm with Gamla Stan across the water. The steel structure spans 140 meters and displays a golden finish visible from a distance in daylight.
The bridge opened on October 25, 2020, and replaced an earlier crossing dating from 1935. The new structure formed part of the wider redesign of the Slussen area between the two districts.
The golden color of the structure echoes Swedish architectural traditions of using bold hues to mark important public works. Pedestrians and cyclists share the wide paths that remain accessible even during winter weather.
Pedestrian and cycling lanes run on separate levels to avoid collisions between users. Traffic flows across multiple lanes that become busy during morning and evening commutes.
The entire steel assembly weighing 3,700 tons was manufactured in China before the voyage to Sweden. The sea journey took seven weeks and arrived in Stockholm during early 2020.
