The region was established in 1870 under Anglo-Egyptian rule and initially included territories that now belong to northern Uganda. These boundaries have shaped the area's geography to the present day.

Juba, the capital of South Sudan, has an international airport that serves as the main access point for travelers. The terrain is partly difficult to traverse and visitors should plan flexibly due to limited infrastructure.
Soldiers from a local military unit launched a rebellion in 1955 against Khartoum's rule. This uprising laid the groundwork for South Sudan's independence movement and revealed early local resistance.
