Bab Lakouas, City gate in Medina of Tunis, Tunisia
Bab Lakouas is a stone gate in the Medina of Tunis that links the neighborhoods of Halfaouine, Bab Souika, and Bab Saadoun. The gate features multiple archways and serves both as a passage between districts and as an access point to traditional markets for handmade goods, textiles, and local products.
Historians trace this gate to the ancient Bab Saqqayin mentioned by Al-Bakri in the 11th century when describing trade routes and kingdoms across North Africa. The structure you see today reflects modifications and renovations made across different periods.
The gate displays traditional Islamic stonework with detailed carvings that you can observe throughout the Medina. These decorative patterns reflect the artistic traditions that continue to define daily life in this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The gate is easy to find and helps you navigate between different sections of the Medina without getting lost. The busy surroundings with many shops make it a natural landmark and gathering place while exploring the old city.
The gate continues to serve its original role as a passage while remaining a living intersection of different craft traditions. Visitors often miss that the shops surrounding it house generations of craftspeople who pass their skills down through family lines.
