The Health Museum, Medical museum in Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey
The Health Museum occupies a stone mansion built in 1875 with gothic, baroque, neo-classical, and orientalist architectural details throughout. Inside, the exhibition divides into physiology and anatomy sections that cover various diseases including cancer, tuberculosis, mental illness, nutrition, dental care, and infectious diseases.
The building was founded in 1918 by Hikmet Hamdi with an initial focus on venereal diseases. The collection later expanded to include infectious diseases and broader health issues.
The museum shows how people in the Ottoman era understood and practiced medicine through figures dressed as doctors, patients, and students from that time. These displays reveal which diseases worried people most and what methods they used to treat them.
The museum is centrally located in the Sultanahmet neighborhood and easily reached on foot. The layout is straightforward with clear sections, making it simple to navigate through all the exhibits.
The building previously served as a film studio for military documentaries and as a shooting location for Binnaz, an early Turkish silent film. This dual purpose shows how this Istanbul landmark had multiple roles beyond medicine.
