Red House Theater, Historic theater in Ximending, Taiwan
The Red House Theater is a historic building in Ximending, Taipei, combining an octagonal main hall with a cross-shaped annex. The facade shows Western and Japanese style elements, and a square adjoins the structure.
Japanese architect Kondo Juro designed this building in 1908 as Taiwan's first government-built market. Later it was converted into a theater for traditional Peking Opera, before taking on its current function.
The building takes its name from the red bricks that shape its facade. Today it hosts exhibitions, small markets, and performances that feature young artists from the region.
The complex sits a short walk from Ximen Metro Station and opens Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 21:30. Cafes, shops, and exhibition areas spread across multiple rooms inside.
The area behind the theater building transforms in the evening into a nightlife zone with bars and meeting spots. This part of the district attracts many people from the local LGBTQ+ community.
