Intercession Cathedral ахтирка, Ukrainian Baroque cathedral in Okhtyrka, Ukraine.
Intercession Cathedral is a Ukrainian Baroque church in Okhtyrka, a city in central Ukraine, and is listed as an architectural monument of national importance. The building has a ship-like floor plan and its exterior walls are decorated with Ionic pilasters and floral relief details.
Construction began in 1753 after a report of a miraculous icon of Mary found near a wooden church that had previously stood on the site. The community decided to replace that earlier structure with a permanent stone building, which is what stands today.
The cathedral is dedicated to the Intercession of Mary, and the paintings inside show scenes from Orthodox Christian tradition that visitors can follow room by room. Services are still held here regularly, so the building remains a living place of worship rather than just a monument.
The cathedral sits in the center of Okhtyrka and can be reached on foot from most points in the city center. Visiting outside of service hours gives more space to look around the interior and take in the architectural details at your own pace.
The original Okhtyrka Icon of Mary, which gave rise to the whole building, is now held in a private collection in Canada and is not on public display. What visitors see inside is a carefully made replica, which has become the focal point of devotion in the cathedral.
