Okhtyrka

Okhtyrka is a city in Sumy Oblast situated along the banks of the Psel River. It contains residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and public spaces connected by streets that form the urban layout.

Ruthenian settlers founded this place in 1641 and developed it into a fortified settlement. By 1655 it became the center of the Okhtyrka Regiment, which shaped its role in the region for centuries.

The Cathedral of the Transfiguration shapes the city center and reflects the Orthodox faith that runs through daily life here. People gather at this landmark to mark important moments and celebrations throughout the year.

The city received the title of Hero City of Ukraine in 2022 for its defense during a military conflict. This recognition honors the residents who protected their home and subsequently worked to rebuild areas that suffered damage.
