Cheney Brothers Historic District, Silk manufacturing historic district in Manchester, Connecticut
Cheney Brothers Historic District is an industrial neighborhood in Manchester containing hundreds of buildings from the 19th century. The layout includes silk factories, worker housing, places of worship, educational buildings, and family mansions all arranged according to a deliberate plan.
The district began in 1838 when the Cheney family started developing silk production and created pioneering manufacturing techniques. They built the first American company to successfully spin and weave silk at commercial scale.
The district features Cheney Hall from 1867, which serves as a theater venue, alongside multiple museums dedicated to local history and firefighting heritage.
The area is best explored on foot, with guided tours available through the Manchester Historical Society to see the preserved factories and mansions. Allow extra time since the grounds spread across multiple city blocks.
The Cheney family built a private railroad in 1869 that became the largest of its kind in the country. It moved materials and workers across the different factory sites within the district.
