George H. Gallup House

The George H. Gallup House is a two-and-a-half-story octagonal residence in Jefferson, Iowa, built in 1901. The structure has wooden board siding, a stone foundation, and each of its eight sides is roughly 16 feet wide.

George H. Gallup, founder of the Gallup Poll and pioneer in public opinion research, was born and raised in this house. The structure was built in 1901 and reflects the architectural innovations that were emerging in the American Midwest during that period.

The house blends classical details with Queen Anne style features that were common in Midwestern homes during the early 1900s. Visitors can see firsthand how families in this region chose to build and decorate their homes.

The building is located at 703 South Chestnut Street and now serves as a venue for overnight stays, business meetings, and special events. Advance arrangements are recommended since it operates as a private function space.

This octagonal structure was the third and final such building that the Gallup family constructed in Jefferson. The family's repeated choice of this unusual design shows how committed they were to this distinctive architectural form.
