Pilot Mound State Forest

Pilot Mound State Forest is a protected woodland covering about 314 acres situated on a glacial mound in Boone County. The forest features multiple trail systems that lead visitors through wooded areas up to higher elevations where natural views open across the surrounding terrain.

The forest was established in 1939 when B.P. Holst donated land to the state of Iowa for conservation purposes. Over time it became an important component of Iowa's forest protection efforts and has served as a research location for studying forest management approaches.

The forest contributes to Iowa's environmental education initiatives by providing opportunities for research, study of forest growth, and ecological understanding.
