Great Esker Park, Nature reserve and hiking trails in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Great Esker Park is a nature reserve with hiking trails in Weymouth, Massachusetts. The 237-acre site features a ridgeline of sand and gravel rising 27 meters above the Weymouth Back River, with surrounding salt marshes and woodlands connected by multiple walking paths.

The landscape formed about 12,000 years ago when glaciers left behind ridges of sand and gravel. These formations developed during the last ice age as massive ice sheets moved through the region.

The park serves as a gathering place for local families exploring woodlands and river edges together on foot. People come here to experience the landscape's natural rhythms and observe seasonal changes in wildlife.

The park features six miles of marked trails with observation points along the river and picnic areas. Visitors will find different difficulty levels, and sturdy footwear is recommended, especially during wet conditions.

The water at this site exhibits a rare phenomenon where the river reverses direction with the tides. Additionally, osprey birds build their nests in structures built above the water, bringing nesting activity to the landscape.
