Webb Memorial State Park, State park with missile site remains in Weymouth, United States
Webb Memorial State Park is a waterfront park on a peninsula near Weymouth that juts into Hingham Bay. The site spans about 36 acres and includes roughly 1 mile of gravel walking paths that run along the Back and Fore Rivers as they meet the bay.
The U.S. military established Nike anti-aircraft missile sites here during the 1950s as part of its air defense system. Command centers for these installations were located across the bay on Spinnaker Island.
The park occupies land once inhabited by the Wampanoag, who recognized its abundance of wild fruits and seafood and returned seasonally to harvest them. Visitors walking the trails today follow paths through terrain that sustained these communities for generations.
The park offers spots for fishing, picnicking, and walking trails, with flat paths and open areas for various activities. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to slowly explore this waterfront landscape.
The land is shaped by three connected drumlins, ice age landforms that give the park its distinctive ridge-and-valley character. It stands as the only mainland portion of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.
