Fort Revere, Military fort in Hull, Massachusetts, US
Fort Revere is a coastal defense installation on a hill in Hull featuring military fortifications, gun batteries, and an observation tower with panoramic views. The grounds span about 8 acres and display different phases of military construction from various eras.
American patriots built the installation in 1776 at the start of the Revolutionary War, originally calling it Fort Independence. French marines later expanded the structures significantly to house more cannons and strengthen coastal defense.
The fort is named after a patriot from the American Revolution and is maintained by a local preservation group that shares its military past with visitors through guided tours and exhibits. Walking through the grounds, you can observe how different sections were added over time to meet changing defense needs.
The grounds are open to the public with parking available for visitors, though access is limited to daylight hours between sunrise and sunset. The observation tower provides views across the water, so visiting on clear days is worthwhile.
The grounds contain remnants of two separate coastal batteries built in different periods, each showing distinct technologies and construction styles. The older battery still holds original cannons and offers insight into early American coastal defense engineering.
