Boston Light, Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor, United States
Boston Light is a lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. The white tower stands 27 meters tall on rocky ground, with a keeper's house and several support buildings spread across the small island.
An earlier version of the tower was built in 1716 as the first lighthouse in North America. The current structure dates to 1783, after British forces destroyed the original during the American Revolution.
Boston Light represents Massachusetts maritime heritage through its second-order Fresnel lens and continuous operation as a navigation aid since the colonial period.
The tower sends out white flashes every ten seconds from about 31 meters above sea level. Visitors can only reach the island by special boat tour, as it lies far out in the harbor with no public ferry access.
The facility remains the only lighthouse in the United States that still has a keeper living and working on site. This tradition has continued without interruption since 1783, even though some operations became automated in 1998.
