Bumpkin Island

Bumpkin Island is a tidal island in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park covering approximately 30 acres with a central elevated landform. The highest point rises about 70 feet above sea level and defines the island's basic structure.

A philanthropist from Boston established a summer medical facility for children with physical disabilities in 1902. Fire destroyed this structure in 1945, ending that chapter of the island's use.

The island served different purposes across time, from a fish-drying site to a place where children received medical care. These changing uses show how the community adapted this remote location to meet various needs.

The island becomes accessible on foot during low tide when a sand formation connects to the mainland. You must bring your own food and water since there are no facilities or services on the island.

A natural sand formation temporarily connects the island to the mainland at Sunset Point during low tide periods. This temporary land bridge disappears and reappears with the tides, making each visit time-sensitive.
