Haw River State Park, State park in Rockingham and Guilford counties, North Carolina, US
Haw River State Park is a protected natural area in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, covering oak and hickory woodlands, wetlands, and swampy zones along the Haw River. The park is divided into two separate sections, connected by trails and a wooden boardwalk that passes through sensitive habitats.
The park was established in 2003 to protect the river corridor and the surrounding woodlands from development. The land was gradually transferred to state ownership over several years before opening to the public.
The Summit Center inside the park is a facility designed for environmental education, where school groups and organized visitors take part in outdoor learning programs. The building and its surroundings are set up to encourage direct contact with the natural world rather than passive observation.
Because the park is split into two separate areas, it helps to decide in advance which section you want to visit on a given day. The boardwalk section is accessible for families with young children and for those who prefer a shorter and easier walk.
The park runs special multi-day programs designed specifically for grandparents and their grandchildren to explore nature together overnight. This kind of program targeting intergenerational pairs is rare among public parks in the United States.
