Heidecke Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, Wildlife refuge and state park in Grundy County, United States.
Heidecke Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is a protected state area in Grundy County, Illinois, built around a large reservoir with rocky shorelines and breakwaters. The eastern shore has a concrete boat ramp, a fishing pier, and parking areas that give access to the water.
The lake was created in 1978 to serve as a cooling pond for the nearby Collins Generating Station. When that industrial use ended, the site was converted into a state fish and wildlife area open to the public.
The lake draws anglers from across the region who come specifically for the fish species that are hard to find elsewhere in Illinois. On weekends, the shore fills with people who set up early in the morning and stay through the day.
The area is open daily from April through fall, though conditions can vary with the season and weather. The boat ramp and fishing pier are on the eastern side of the lake and are easy to find from the main entrance.
Walleye, Hybrid Striped Bass, and Muskellunge are all stocked here through targeted state programs, making this one of the few places in Illinois where all three can be found in the same water. Anglers who want to catch any of these species would otherwise need to visit several different locations.
